When we think of a Jewish heritage tour, Europe will be the first to our mind. But have you tried going on a Jewish tour in Asia? How about India? History of India According to the research of Shalva Weil, the Jewish communities in South Asia began relatively late. However, about a hundred years ago, there was confirmed evidence that there’s an early connection between Jews and South Asia during the time in the Bible where the cargo ships of King Solomon brought kofim (apes), tukim (peacocks) and almag (sandalwood) in exchange of items to build the Temple. But it is not yet clear that this King Solomon’s henchmen are the reason why Jewish communities got established. Unknown to everyone, India has one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world. Interestingly, the largest Jewish community: the Bene Israel, lived unknown to the rest of the Jewish world for many years. Moreover, Jews have lived in India for many years, and they never experienced any anti-Semitism from the locals. Paradesi Synagogue Paradesi Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in India. It was opened to cater the descendants of the Sephardim from Netherlands and Spain, or the Paradesi Jews. This synagogue has its own history of discrimination in its early years, too. Before, Malabari Jews were allowed to worship at the synagogue, but they were not full members. On the other hand, the Meshuchrarim or Brown Jews initially faced extensive discrimination and were not allowed to worship there. But now, the synagogue is open to all the Jews in India. Today, the synagogue is one of the most visited tourist destinations for both Jews and Gentiles alike. The synagogue has preserved Torahs, and each Torah has a gold crown, with precious gems. The synagogue's interior stands beautifully with its handmade porcelain floor and brass pulpit. Mumbai If you want to visit many synagogues at a time, Mumbai is the best place to go to. Mumbai has a large number of Jews, and they also have the most beautiful synagogue. The Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue has a charming interior with Minton tiles and Victorian lamps, and the signature stained windows glass. The Red Church Your Jewish travel is not complete if you don’t visit the Red Church, or Ohel David Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Asia besides Israel. Built by David Sassoon, a wealthy philanthropist, and businessman in 1867, the synagogue became an important part of the cultural heritage in India because of its English Gothic style. Kosher Tours Going on a Jewish travel in India will give you a glimpse of the liberation of Jews in other countries. If you are not confident enough to go on a tour in India, there are available kosher tours too like Kosher X Tours. They are open all year round for two or more guests.
