Though ranked as the most religious state, Mississippi ranks only as the 46th state that has Jews. One amazing thing about Jews in this state is how they work and strive hard to establish themselves. Sadly the population of Jews in Mississippi dropped to 1,550 in 2012 and are now only about .1% of the state’s population. On the other hand, the state still boasts their Jewish heritage and culture, and you can celebrate it with them by visiting Mississippi. Here are some interesting sites you can visit for your Jewish travel: Beth Israel Congregation The Beth Israel Congregation is one of the two remaining synagogues in Mississippi. Initially, the congregation’s population composed of only fifteen families. The first building was inspired by the Greek revival style. They eventually moved to a more modernized building in 1964. After moving, the congregation grew and by 1927, there were at least 525 Jewish residents. However, after the population peaked, it experienced a significant decline in the following years. The continuous growth of the community left no choice for the Jews but to move to bigger cities. Broad Street Bakery Known to be the only Jewish deli in Mississippi, Broad Street Bakery offers fresh deli classics and bread in Mississippi. The owner comes from a long line of Jewish bakers and they have successfully established themselves in 1946. Kosher River Cruise If you really want to have an authentic Jewish tour in Mississippi, I would suggest that you try kosher river cruises. They have been a kosher touring service for almost 30 years, and are well-known for their all-kosher river cruising in Europe. A kosher river cruise is a luxury river cruise and recently, they have included Mississippi in their voyage. You will enjoy their all-kosher and remarkably delicious meals as well as in-depth Jewish heritage tours. They even have an onboard synagogue! The Jewish population in the Mississippi has always been considered a minority, and yet until now they still exist in the south. Having a Jewish tour in Mississippi will allow you to explore how they preserve their culture throughout the years.
