In the Jewish ghettos of Kroměříž were three synagogues.
The first, and therefore the oldest with its age unknown, was at the very least from the 16th century, in the Water Street. It was demolished in 1656 . The second temple , built during the years 1689 – 1693 at Moravec Street by master mason Matthew Parians and architect Giovanni Pietro Tencalla, was a Baroque building of the so-called Lvov type. It was demolished in 1921, and is now a garden. According to Hugo Gold, however, it was already demolished in 1908. The third synagogue was built by architect Ladislav Mesensky in the years 1909 - 1910 at today's Komenského square, According to the designs of Viennese architect Jakub Gartner , a native of Přerov . The Temple of Kroměříž was unveiled in Neo-Romanesque style with Oriental Moorish elements. The construction was inaugurated in 1910. It was a detached square basilica-like structure with acentral dome and two lateral towers. Above the portal was a large rosette window with a David's star motif, with the Hebrew Psalm כי ביתי בית תפילה יקרא לכל העמים My house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations - (Isaiah 56: 7). The Tvaroslovi and the overall concept of the temple was similar to Gartner's previously constructed synagogues in Opava (1895) and Olomouc (1897). The Kroměříž Jewish community ceased to exist in 1940, during World War 2. In 1942, the Nazis demolished the synagogue. "It happened in November 1942. A German garrison had big problems with the blast and had to repeat it several times. The material from the demolished building was dismantled by the locals," says Jitka Zezulová, director of the State District Archive in Kromeriz. On the land where it stood, a monument to the Holocaust victims was built in 1994 by Olbram Zoubek . A virtual reconstruction of the synagogue, including many 3D visualizations, was completed in 2013 by David Krestan of the Technical University in Vienna for his diploma thesis. The community no longer exists, but the Jewish legacy will live on. If you wish to see Kroměříž for yourself and learn more, it’s best to do this through arranged kosher tours.
