Far away from the bustling Paris is Avignon, located in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the southeastern region of France. This city, though not as popular as Rome and Vatican, holds a historical significance in terms of religious power of Christianity. Through the camp of popes moving the papal seat to Avignon, it resulted to the protection of the Jewish community in times of exclusion and discrimination brought about by nearby persistent French towns some 500 years ago. Today, visiting through a kosher vacation as a traveler and in a way, a pilgrim, let’s look around remarkable sights and places of this serene city and the remnants of its glorious past. Palais Des Papes A fortress and palace, Palais des Papes is the home of the popes during the 14th Century. With its vast land area and towering cathedrals, it is considered the largest Gothic palace ever built, equivalent to four cathedrals. This papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity, holding six papal conclaves to its helm before returning to the Vatican. 25 rooms are now open for viewing and it houses numerous paintings, a tea salon, and its high, hollow ceilings that fascinates any visitor. Jardin des Domes Not so far the Palais de Papes is the enchanting garden of Rocher des Domes. The high part of the area became increasingly popular as a strolling spot during the 19th century, and the people decided to build a public park there. It is famous for its exquisite, English-style park with a wonderful view of the city. Adorned with old statues, ponds, and trees, plus it’s free - it is truly wonderful to visit and spend an afternoon with. Pont Saint-Bénézet
While beautiful architecture is of no surprise to the French, a bridge in Avignon goes down as one of the most distinct in the history of Europe. Pont Saint-Bénézet is a medieval bridge known for a song named before it, “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”. It’s a song dated back in the 15th century, accompanied by a curtsy-waltz dance.
