What Is Kosher Travel? Here’s What You Need to Know: A Blog About Eating Kosher Wherever You Travel12/16/2021 Traveling kosher always has its challenges. You're limited by what's available in whatever city you're in, so it's not always easy to find a specific item that you're craving. There will occasionally be waits, and sometimes the waitstaff seem less than eager to accommodate your special requests. But I've always been willing to make sacrifices for this gift of kosher experience while traveling with kosher river cruises in particular. What is kosher? Kosher is defined as anything that adheres to Jewish dietary laws and customs. To be considered kosher, a food must first be fit for human consumption according to Jewish law. What foods are considered "kosher"? Meat and poultry are the mainstays of kosher meals, though dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream may also be eaten. Kosher travel means that you will be eating food that has been prepared in a certain way in accordance with dietary requirements of Jewish law (kashrut). Kosher food comes from animals that were killed and processed in accordance with the said law. Kosher meat must be slaughtered by a specially trained rabbi and it cannot be mixed with any other type of meat. All dairy products must come from animals that have been milked under controlled conditions, and fish must be fished and prepared according to specific guidelines. Every detail is taken into consideration, including the type of utensils used to cook the food, the pots they are cooked in, and even whether or not there is a window above your sink. To ensure these standards are met, many hotels offer kosher kitchens that offer both dairy and meat cooking facilities for their guests. However, some hotels do not provide this service for their guests. This can make things difficult for kosher travelers. Most people think that traveling as a kosher person is going to be difficult. After all, many of the most popular vacation destinations aren’t known for their kosher eateries. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth! There are plenty of places that cater specifically to the kosher crowd and offer plenty of delicious options for anyone who wants something different from your standard burger or pizza fare. Traveling is an important part of life and it's good for us to experience what the world has to offer. At least once in our lifetime we should visit a city that we wouldn't think of visiting otherwise. Because when we break out of our comfort zone, we learn about new cultures and make connections with others who share our interests. There are many reasons why someone might choose to obey kosher laws when traveling. Some do so for health reasons, others for religious ones. Whatever the reason, it can often seem like a daunting task to try to keep kosher tour guidelines. Traveling as a kosher person can be hard if you don’t know what you’re doing, but with an open mind and an open palate, it can also be fun and delicious. The good news is that with a little bit of planning, you can totally do it.
